Everything you need to know

FAQ

Before your first ride, check the essentials below. If something is still unclear, send us a message.

Riding with us

What is 404° Collective?

404° is a Brussels-based social road cycling collective. We organise rides and community moments where connection matters as much as the kilometres. We are not a racing team or a traditional club with rankings and mandatory attendance.

Can anyone join a ride?

Yes, provided you are comfortable riding a road bike in a group and can maintain the advertised pace and distance. Read the ride information carefully and contact us if you are unsure which format suits you.

Do I need to become a member first?

No formal membership is required. Join the Strava club, choose a suitable ride and come to the meeting point. The WhatsApp community is optional but useful for updates and conversations between rides.

How much does it cost?

Regular community rides are free. Special events, trips or partner activities may occasionally involve a cost, which will always be clearly announced beforehand.

Where are rides announced?

Strava is the main source for dates, routes, paces and registration. WhatsApp is used for community conversations and practical last-minute information. Important changes may also be shared on Instagram.

Pace and level

What pace do you ride at?

Each ride has its own advertised average pace. Social formats usually sit around 23–27 km/h, while Flat Out rides can be faster. Terrain, wind and group size can influence the final average.

What does “no drop” mean?

No drop means we use planned regrouping points and do not leave someone alone on the road. It does not remove the need to choose an appropriate pace and distance for your current fitness.

Is this suitable for beginners?

Some rides are accessible to newer road cyclists, but basic bike handling and confidence riding near others are necessary. Start with a shorter, slower ride and tell a ride leader that it is your first group ride.

What happens if I cannot hold the pace?

Tell a ride leader as soon as possible. The group can help at a regrouping point and decide on the safest option. Repeated difficulty usually means that another ride format will offer a better experience next time.

Practical details

What should I bring?

Bring a roadworthy bike, helmet, water, food, spare tube, pump or inflator and clothing appropriate for the weather. Lights are strongly recommended whenever visibility may be limited.

Do I need to register?

Join the event on Strava whenever possible. It helps the ride leaders estimate group size and share any route or timing updates with the right people.

What if the weather is bad?

Safety comes first. A ride may be adjusted or cancelled because of storms, ice, extreme heat or unsafe road conditions. Check Strava and WhatsApp before leaving home.

What group-riding rules should I know?

Hold a predictable line, avoid sudden braking, point out hazards, communicate turns and stops, and follow the ride leaders. Ride two abreast only when conditions allow and respect all traffic rules.

Can I organise a community ride?

Yes. Community rides are built around member initiative. Contact the team with your route, proposed pace, distance and date so we can help shape and announce it.
